Scientific scope of the laboratory
The identity of the laboratory is built around transport infrastructures and the assessment of their impacts and performances. Research provides answers to societal needs such as improving user safety by reducing accidents and minimizing environmental impacts.
EASE laboratory focuses its activities on transport infrastructures in urban and interurban areas in view of assessing their performance at different steps (design, construction, use and maintenance) based on safety and environmental criterions.
The research methodology is based on:
- a multi-scale approach, going from the analysis of road surface conditions or soil pollutants to the global efficiency of an infrastructure, the overall impact of the works, and the insertion of the infrastructure in the territories.
- a multidisciplinary approach, in view of integrating during the infrastructure construction and use phases, the transformation of matter at the origin of cohesion of materials, their effects on the use properties of these infrastructures, their impacts on the environment, (chemical, physical or mechanical) and their impacts on the characteristics of the crossed territory. Thus, the activities gather with the following disciplines: mechanic, civil engineering, statistics, chemistry, ecology and economy.

The technical skills used in the research mainly concern instrumentation, measurements, prototype development, and software development.
Description of the activities
The laboratory develops methodologies and indicators for infrastructure and territory assessment. It develops indicators assessing impacts on environment (physical environments, living environments) and risk indicators in urban, outer-urban and interurban areas. Knowledge and databases related to those two research topics are developed to allow an assessment of the mobility service and to introduce, in our tools, suitable indicators for overall assessment of infrastructure. Physical and empirical models and methodologies are also developed. The purpose is to predict:
• tribological or physical behaviors of various systems among which the contact between pavement surface and tire (roads, railways, airports), the contact between users and carriageway;
• future of pollutants emitted during construction and maintenance of infrastructure or the preservation of its level of service for the user,
• all the interactions inside the system “infrastructure – biotope – flora – fauna”.
All the research works and their valorization are gathered around the following activities:
• physical and numerical models;
• field data collections;
• experiments, laboratory tests, field tests;
• safety and environmental indicators;
• data bases (safety and environment about infrastructures) and generation of web sites;
• experimental technical platforms (test track for road experiments, measurement bench for surface and adhesion characteristics, on-board emission measurement platform for civil engineering processes),
• standardization and certification activities.
